1951 Rover Jet 1 Gas Turbine Car
-
In 1951, the Rover company experimented with a gas turbine-driven roadster. It was a simple cycle machine (non-regernative cycle) and thus suffered for its gas mileage.
Later models used a heat exchanger to recover the exhaust heat to pre-heat the gases going into the combustor. This concept improved mileage considerably.

1964 Rover BRM Lemans Gas Turbine Car
-
The Rover BRM was raced this car successfully at Le Mans in 1964 (simple cycle). It ran respectably. This introduced many possiblities that later improved with a regenerative racer in 1965.
A video of the races can be purchased from a supplier in England. We have a copy at our PAL-Amsterdam facility.

1967 INDY Gas Turbine Car
-
This 1967 Studebaker STP Special was built by Andy Granatelli. The side engine racer was driven by Parnelli Jones. In the 200 mile race (500 miles) at The Brickyard, Car #40 lead 171 laps. On the 197th lap, it suffered a gear box failure ($6.00 part) and eventually finished sixth.
What might have been the impact on automobiles had the gas turbine-driven car actually won the race? You can see the racer in the museum in Indianapolis.
The next year, "the powers that be" changed the rules to make the use of the gas turbine untenable in INDY car racing.

1950 MGTD Racer (Hogwarts Special) - Dave Lucier
-
Based on our research, this car was built at the MG factory in December, 1950. It is "eroneously" registered as a 1951 in NY State. It is raced as a '50 MGTD, super charged to qualify for special exemptions. Its maiden race was on September 11, 2004. It won its first race, beating 11 other cars in its class. Yes, 9/11 will be a day we'll always remember, but this time for positive reasons.

Some famous excuses given to insurance companies for car accidents:
-
You can Tell an FEP by his/her license plate
-
It is estimated that, at any given time, 15% of all motorists are drunk. So how do we explain the other 85%? It has to do with their state of origin. And just as Wisconsin cops watch license plate tags to ensure that all visiting Illinois cars get tickets, you can prepare your Labor Day motoring responses by checking plates and acting accordingly. We think FEP grads fit the bill as typical drivers from these states:

Building America
-
If you don't think that the bailout of General Motors was a good idea, read this article in Hemmings Classic Car, November 2010. Go to the Hemmings website and open the tab called: Publications. Scroll down to the tab called Classic Car. The companies, products and, yes, JOBS! created in associated businesses as the auto industry turns to others is staggering. Another way to look at it: for every job lost at GM and other car and truck manufacturers, perhaps as many as 10 other jobs are lost and perhaps gone forever. GM reported a $2billion profit in the second quarter 2010. The jobs shouldn't be far behind!

Race Track Replaced by Gas Turbines
-
In the early 1900s, sulky (harness) racing was done on Brunots Island in Ohio River adjacent to Pittsburgh, PA. Soon thereafter, auto racing was the choice of competitors on the dirt track of this 129 acre island. Today, GE gas turbines occupy the site. Thie only access is via a train bridge that connects the city with the opposite side and allows walker/workers to traverse along side the tracks. Twice a month on Tuesdays (and sometimes Thursdays during outage work), a ferry treks across and back during the day to take people, cars, trucks and supplies to the island.
