Legend has it that he once got stuck inside in an enclosed space (not sure if it was a turbine, generator, boiler or what? He told students that belt buckle worn in front was the reason. Thereafter, he said, he always wore it on the side. Lesson learned!

I worked with John while he was at the FEDC and noticed his belt buckle turned to the side, but never asked him about it. My assumption was that he was a product of the 1950s and many guys wore the buckle on the side back then and he just never changed.
